BMW X1

Balancing fun and practicality in a subcompact, the BMW X1 won’t disappoint users interested in said criteria. Courtesy of a 2.0l turbocharged 4-cylinder engine, the X1 can push 228hp which along with its crisp handling gives the SUV enough pep for you to call it enjoyable. The interior is roomy with a driver focused cockpit, but the front seats lack bolstering. All in all however, the X1 provides a proper bang for its buck.

Volvo XC40

From Volvo’s line of fashionable SUVs, the XC40 is a particularly handsome one. Along with standard all wheel drive (for the T5 trim), it comes with plenty of tech and upscale driver assists. The cabin is amply spaced but what stands out is the quirkily designed interior that doesn’t sacrifice function for form. The entry-level model (T4) is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder that produces 184hp, but the T5 pushes 248hp and comes standard with all wheel drive as mentioned.

BMW X2

Despite being a BMW X1 underneath, the X2 SUV does set itself apart. The exterior styling took a different route along with its driving characteristics, with more agile and even more driver-friendly handling. However, the interior is less practical than its milder sibling with its squared off shape allowing for more cabin room. All X2 models come with a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that produces either 228-or 302 horsepower, which comes with the X2 exclusive M35i trim model.

Mercedes-Benz GLA-class

This is the most affordable way to get into a Benz SUV and could be well worth it, offering nothing short of what Mercedes’ contemporary design language has to offer in its range. As with most Benzs these days, the interior is well-endowed with tech and is as premium as ever, with increased cabin room for the 2022 model year. Alongside a good fuel economy, the GLA can be quite practical. However, the MBUX infotainment system can be a tad too convoluted for most consumers.

Audi Q3

Resembling its bigger siblings, the Q3 takes their exact same design cues in the exterior making it one of the better-looking SUVs in this list. Additionally, it enjoys the same equipment and premium materials that Audi uses for the Q5, Q7 and Q8, giving the Q3 an upmarket edge, although it has admittedly gone through some cost-cutting which is to be expected. The Q3 is powered by a turbocharged four-cylinder engine that makes either 184- or 228-hp and comes standard with an eight-speed automatic transmission and Quattro all-wheel drive.

Mercedes-Benz GLB-class

The GLB shares its powertrain and chassis with the GLA along with the turbocharged four-cylinder engine and optional all-wheel drive system. Although the GLB offers a distinctly different design language, in addition to extra cargo space and a third row of seats. Moreover, with more tech and driver assists, the GLB-class can get lucrative as you add more and more options, although that can also make it quite pricey.
