The problem was initially reported in 2018, and the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has been investigating the Korean automakers since April 2019 over complaints of more than 3000 engine fires and 103 injuries, all of which were unrelated to crashes.Earlier this year, Hyundai recalled 2006–2011 Elantras and 2007–2011 Elantra Tourings over a similar issue of water making its way into the ABS unit, making way for a potential fire hazard. In recent years, both the automakers who have many parts in common with Kia being a subsidiary of Hyundai, have recalled over 2.5 million vehicles in regards to fire hazards.
